Adding water at the truck to make placement easier does the same damage on a larger scale - it lowers strength and increases shrinkage across the whole slab. Exterior flatwork here gets floated and broomed rather than burnished with a steel trowel, and that is not a shortcut: hard troweling densifies the top and drives out the entrained air the mix was ordered for, so a driveway finished that way blisters and flakes in a way a broom finish does not. Joints are the last operation and the most time sensitive. An early entry saw can cut as soon as the slab carries the machine, while a conventional wet saw waits until the concrete is hard enough not to ravel.

The First Winter Decides How the Surface Ages

A new driveway is at its most vulnerable in the months right after it is poured, and nearly all of the damage that happens then is avoidable. Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks and keeps giving up moisture for longer than that, so the first season is not the time to test it. Skip deicers entirely through that first winter. Sand gives traction without chemistry, and a plastic shovel or a plow with shoes on the blade keeps steel off the surface. After the first year, rock salt in moderation is survivable on an air entrained slab, but two categories are worth avoiding permanently.

Ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate, sold both as fertilizer and as deicer, attack cement paste chemically rather than physically. The calcium and magnesium chloride blends marketed as gentler keep liquid water on the surface at temperatures where sodium chloride has already given up, and liquid water is the one ingredient the freeze thaw cycle cannot do without. Sealing is the other early question. A penetrating silane or siloxane water repellent is the sensible product on exterior flatwork, because it soaks in and leaves the surface breathing, while a film forming acrylic applied over a slab still releasing moisture can blush white and peel. Either product waits until the concrete has cured out, which is weeks after the pour rather than days.

Replace the Whole Driveway, or Just the Failed Panels?

Concrete is poured in panels separated by joints, and that is exactly what makes partial replacement possible. The question is whether the failure is confined to specific panels or whether the ground underneath the whole slab has moved. The answer is usually visible at the joints.

Replace the failed panels only

The cracking follows joints and stops at them, the rest of the slab is level underfoot, and the failure is concentrated at the apron or at one settled section near a downspout. In that case we saw out the affected panels on the joint lines, dig down to find out why the base failed there, correct it, and pour back with matching thickness and finish. Section 245-22F of the Town code sets a minimum replacement of 10 by 10 feet for concrete work in the right-of-way, which is a useful reminder that patch pieces smaller than that tend to fail again. Expect a color difference at first that closes up over a year or two.

Replace the whole driveway

Cracks cross joints instead of stopping at them, panels have settled in more than one location, the surface is scaled across most of its area, or the drive was poured directly on unprepared ground and has no meaningful base under it. Patching that is money spent on a countdown. Full replacement lets us fix the grade so water leaves the property instead of pooling at the garage, correct the thickness for what actually parks there, and lay joints out on a proper grid.
